Overuse Injuries in Youth Baseball

Over the last few years the number of youth baseball players that have needed medical attention has skyrocketted. Some of these injuries come from the natural dangers of playing any sport. Kids collide with each other, fall down, slide wrong, get hit by the ball. These injuries have always ocurred and will likely continue. No matter how much we'd like to, we can't simply wrap our kids in bubble wrap and send them onto the field.

The real concern is the growth in the number of overuse injuries in youth baseball, particullarly Tommy John surgery. With Tommy John surgery the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is replaced using a ligament from the leg, foot, or forearm. While receovery from the surgery is very likely, the procedure itself would most likely be avoidable by using proper care.

This blog will be used to explore the causes of overuse injuries, treatment, and possible prevention techniques.
